Ok so for those of you that don’t know, I love makeup. You’d think someone who is as obsessed with all natural and organic stuff like me would be opposed, but not in the slightest. Ever since I was little I found the power of makeup fascinating, not to mention it is so fun and you get to play with bright colors.
I only started honing in on my makeup game about a year or so ago. I used to be a Walgreens makeup kind of girl until I ventured into Ulta and my life (and unfortunately my wallet) changed forever.
So if you are looking to experiment with some fun, higher-end makeup, I’ve got the list for my tried and true go-tos (so far that is). Have fun!
Primer – I was skeptical to start using primer because I was convinced it would clog my pores and break me out. I also didn’t really understand the purpose. The best explanation I ever got was this “You wouldn’t paint a canvas or a wall without putting a primer on first would you?” Point made. My favorite thus far is one of the originals. It is the Photo Finish Foundation Primer from Smashbox. I have ventured to others like L’Oreal and Urban Decay, but honestly, Smashbox puts on a full and even coat that just makes my makeup pop best.
Foundation – I fell in love with Mac Studio Fix Fluid Foundation. You can buy it right on the Mac website or at your local Macy’s. I’d suggest going to the store and trying it out to find the shade that best fits your skin. I’ve had a love/hate relationship with foundations over the years. It is hard to not go too yellow or too oily. I have sensitive skin. This foundation comes in so many colors and leaves such a soft finish. Plus it is super blendable which is always a plus. You don’t want the mask line.
Concealer -The right concealer took me forever to find. I landed on Too Faced Born This Way as my daytime concealer. It is the perfect lightness to give a more natural look but still do its job. The texture is also super hydrating and creamy. For my “going out” look I use the famous Shape Tape by Tarte. This concealer literally gets rid of any flaw on your face. It is extremely heavy but will make you look flawless in photos. You definitely need a light hand when applying and to really blend it in well. Done right, it is amazing.
Powders – For my translucent finishing powder I use Bye Bye Pores by It Cosmetics. The name pretty much says it all. It blurs any trace of pores and leaves a smooth finish. I set my concealer with this as well as put it on after all of my makeup to blend and set it. I also use Mac’s Mineralize Skinfinish Natural powder. I like to use this to blend in areas of my makeup and sometimes will use this to set my foundation as well. It is nice and light, but the pigmentation carries through which is great.
Bronzer/contour – I haven’t hit pro status with liquid contour yet. It still just feels too unnatural to me. I stick with Tarte’s Amazon Clay Matte Bronzer. Eventually I might get another Shape Tape in a darker shade and try a liquid contour, but for now, I’ll stick to my pressed powder.
Blush – Feels like I’m a spokesperson for Tarte at this point, but this is also another one of their products. I use their Amazon Clay 12-Hour Blush. I will say I’m not 100% sold on it yet. It is a pretty color, but I feel like I really have to work my brush to get the powder to pick up. So I’m up for trying other brands here too.
Highlighter – You guessed it, TARTE! Currently, I am using a duo pack of Tarte bronzer and highlighter kind of like the one here. Mine is discontinued, but I’m pretty sure this is the same highlighter. It’s a great daytime highlight because it isn’t too sparkly, just the right amount of glow. It is buildable though and can work for nighttime. I really want to try a rose gold one and have been looking at Anastasia Glow Kits for my next splurge.
Mascara – This may surprise you, but I’m giving drugstore makeup some love with my go-to L’Oreal Original Telescopic Mascara. This stuff elongates my lashes and separates them better than any other mascara I have tried. Beware it is very wet and takes a little while to dry. But once set, I’ve never gotten more compliments on my eyelashes than I have with this under $10 mascara.
Brow Powder – It’s taken me three years to craft my eyebrows and I’m still learning. So far, I’m most comfortable with Anastasia’s Brow Powder Duo. It allows you to have a more natural look, but with the right application, can also look defined. I don’t trust myself with a pencil or the gel, so this is great for those that aren’t ready to take the plunge yet.
Setting Spray – Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray will change your life. After your done with your makeup, a few good sprays of this across your face will keep your makeup flawless all day long. I kid you not. When I do a full face of makeup and have this on, my makeup doesn’t move for at least 8 hours. If you are looking to get into makeup and don’t know where to start, a primer and this setting spray will give you the first steps in a long lasting and fresh face.
Whether you are just starting out or looking to change up your makeup routine, remember makeup is fun.
You may not be able to afford everything you want at once or you might feel like you are doing it all wrong. That’s what we did when we were kids though right? So embrace it and don’t be afraid to experiment. Find what best fits you and own it.
