Ahh the feels of Fall mean freshly baked apple everything. Well actually give me any cold chill and I’m down to bake something warm and delicious. I never really was a fan of apple crisp because it always gave me a stomach ache. Once I found out I couldn’t have dairy, baking became even more cumbersome. However, this recipe is AMAZING and nothing short of a perfect apple crisp. (Plus it is gluten and dairy free!)
Here’s my simple and delicious recipe for apple crisp that is 100% gluten-free and dairy-free!
Serving Size: 9
Prep Time: 20-25 mins
Bake Time: 30-35 mins
6-7 freshly picked apples (Use a good baking apple. I used Cortland.)
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tbsp. granulated sugar
Crumble Topping Ingredients
Step 1 – Preheat the over to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Step 2 – Peel the apples and cut them into thin long slices. You need enough apple slices to fill a 9x9in. baking pan with about 1/4 inch room for topping.
Step 3 – In a large mixing bowl, place the apple slices and sprinkle in your cinnamon and sugar. I don’t really measure this part. Simply give them a good coating. Season it to your liking and mix the apples to be evenly coated. Dump the spiced apples into the 9x9in. baking pan and set aside.
Step 4 – In the same mixing bowl you just used, pour the flour, sugar, brown sugar, and softened dairy-free butter. The butter should be hard, but malleable. Using your fingertips, gently massage the mixture to combine the topping ingredients. After a minute or two, you will notice the mixture becomes crumb-like in texture. Keep massaging the mix until the butter chunks are evenly distributed and you have soft sugar crumbles. Be careful not to overmix, as you don’t want the butter spread to get too warm/soft.
Step 5 – Take small handfuls of the crumb topping and scatter it over the apples. Make sure to put an even coating across the top to ensure everyone gets a bite of the good stuff.
Step 6 – Place it in the oven and bake for 30-35 minutes. You will know it is done when the corners begin to darken and it bubbles underneath the topping.
Step 7 – Let it cool! It is so hard not to dig right in, but let it rest for at least 20 minutes (preferably 30-40 minutes). This allows all the liquids to gel and creates the proper consistency of an apple crisp.
Ta-da! You just made the most delicious and simple, gluten-free and dairy-free apple crisp! If you want to add a little extra, you can pop on some So Delicious Cashew Milk Vanilla Ice Cream for a finishing touch. Enjoy!
